Read tapestry charts flat or in the round

The same chart reads differently flat versus in the round. Pick the mode that matches how you crochet, then follow the generated rows — not the other mode’s habit.

Mode toggle

In the tapestry crochet pattern maker, switch Back and forth (flat) vs In the round. The toggle changes how rows are written (direction and turn assumptions); it does not by itself turn a flat panel into a seamed tube — construction still depends on how you cast on and join.

Width is stitches; set max yarn colors as usual. Privacy: local images. Entry choice: photo vs blank.

Back and forth (flat)

For flat panels and wall hangings — turn at the end of each row. Written rows follow flat reading (odd/even directions may differ; trust the generated text). Confirm you will actually turn before row 1.

Failure modes: using flat text for a tube (spiral drift); ignoring odd/even direction so the motif mirrors wrong.

In the round

For tubes and hats — keep going the same way. The text will not assume turn-arounds. After switching modes, re-read the whole row list and reprint if needed.

Failure modes: turning every round despite round text; losing the start-of-round stitch so vertical stripes “crawl”. Mark the start with a stitch marker.

Row-by-row text

Row by row looks like “5 A, 3 B, 5 A”; letters match Materials. After recolor, resize, or mode changes, re-export — do not crochet from an old screenshot.
