How cross stitch sizes work
Fabric count is the number of stitches per inch. A design that is 140 stitches wide is 10 inches wide on 14-count Aida (140 ÷ 14) and about 7.8 inches on 18-count.
Aida, evenweave and linen
Aida has clear holes, one stitch per square, so its count is its stitches per inch. Evenweave and linen are finer and are usually stitched over two threads, which halves the count: 28-count evenweave stitched over two gives 14 stitches per inch, the same size as 14-count Aida.
How much margin?
Leave at least 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 cm) on every side for framing or a hoop, more for large pieces that will be stretched over a board. The fabric to cut above already includes the margin on both sides.

Cross stitch calculator questions
How do I calculate the finished size of a cross stitch?
Divide the number of stitches by the fabric count. 100 stitches on 14-count Aida is 100 ÷ 14 ≈ 7.1 inches (18.1 cm).
What does 14-count mean?
14 stitches per inch. Higher counts mean smaller stitches and a smaller finished design.
How much extra fabric do I need?
Add 2 to 3 inches on every side for framing. A design 7 inches wide needs fabric about 13 inches wide with a 3-inch margin.
What does stitching over two mean?
On evenweave or linen each stitch covers two threads in each direction, so the effective count is half the fabric count: 28-count over two equals 14 stitches per inch.
How many stitches fit an 8 × 10 inch frame?
On 14-count Aida, 112 × 140 stitches. Use the reverse calculator above for other sizes and counts.
