Perler beads

Knock out the photo background before beading

To keep a subject without a busy backdrop, enable Remove background, then tune tolerance. It saves background codes and bead counts — it is not magic cutout.

Enable Remove background

After upload in the Perler maker, enable Remove background. Works best on white/studio backs, relatively clean skies, and high-contrast product shots. Weak on busy foliage, gradient walls, or same-hue subject/background mixes — hair, soft edges, and shadows may be damaged.

Some tools such as the pixel art converter have no equivalent — crop first or erase after.

Background tolerance

Use Background tolerance: Keep more ↔ Remove more.

  • Hair/fringe vanishing → Keep more;
  • Fringe or backdrop leftovers → Remove more;
  • Nudge in small steps while comparing Pattern and Original tabs.

Aggressive tolerance can delete pale clothing or highlights — pull back immediately.

Failure modes and cleanup

  1. Crop closer to the subject before upload;
  2. After generate, Edit with Erase/Paint;
  3. Replace all leftover backdrop colors (Replace all);
  4. Or reshoot/replace the source photo.

Recommended order

  1. Brand and approximate width;
  2. Remove background + tolerance;
  3. Max colors so backdrop shades do not consume the budget;
  4. Cleanup/dither as needed (cleanup & dither);
  5. Hand-edit and check materials.
