Why use a double-sided adhesive sheet?
In traditional kinusaiga the fabric is held only by the grooves. That works, but larger pieces can bubble up in the middle and fabric can shift while you tuck. A sheet of double-sided adhesive on the board surface solves both problems:
- Fabric stays perfectly flat, even on big background pieces.
- Pieces don’t slide while you tuck the edges.
- The finished picture is more durable and easier to hang or gift.
What to look for
- Double-sided, with liners on both sides — sheets rather than narrow tape, so one sheet covers the whole board.
- Permanent and acid-free, so it won’t yellow or stain the fabric.
- Thin — thick foam tape fills the grooves and makes tucking harder.
- Big enough — at least the size of your board (8.5" × 11" sheets cover most patterns).

Stick it to the board
Remove one liner and smooth the sheet onto the clean foam board with a ruler or credit card, working out air bubbles from the center.
Keep the top liner on
Leave the second liner in place. Tape your printed cut map on top.
Cut the grooves
Score every line through the paper, the liner and the adhesive into the foam, about 1/8" deep.
Peel as you go
Peel the liner from one shape at a time, lay the fabric on it and tuck the edges. The rest of the board stays non-sticky until you need it.

Adhesive FAQ
Do you need adhesive for kinusaiga?
No — the grooves alone hold the fabric. An adhesive sheet simply keeps pieces flat and makes the finished piece more durable, which is why many makers use one.
Should I apply the adhesive before or after cutting the grooves?
Before. Stick the sheet to the board, keep the top liner on, tape the pattern on and cut through everything. Peel the liner off shape by shape as you tuck.
Is 3M double-sided adhesive good for kinusaiga?
3M and similar brands make thin, acid-free double-sided adhesive sheets and transfer tape that work well. Choose a permanent, acid-free sheet that is large enough to cover your board in one piece.
Can I reposition fabric on adhesive?
A little. Most permanent sheets grip quickly, so lay the fabric down gently and tuck the edges before pressing the center.
