How it works

From picture to tapestry crochet graph in three steps

  1. Upload a picture

Bold shapes with two to six colors work best: logos, animals, lettering, simple illustrations.

  2. Set stitches and colors

Choose how many stitches wide your piece is and how many yarn colors you want to carry.

  3. Crochet row by row

Follow the graph or the written instructions. Each row lists how many stitches to work in each color.

What you get

A graph and written rows, together

Row-by-row instructions

Every row is written out as stitch runs, for example “5 A, 3 B, 5 A”, starting from the bottom row.

Flat or in the round

Flat work alternates direction each row; in the round every row is read from right to left. Switch with one click.

Letters for every yarn

Each color gets a letter that matches the key and the chart, so you never confuse similar shades.

2 to 12 colors

The maker picks the most important colors in your image. Fewer colors mean fewer strands to carry.

Stitch counts per color

See how many stitches use each color to estimate how much yarn to buy.

Edit the graph

Paint, fill and erase stitches, with undo. Clean up single stitches that would be tedious to work.

Tips

How to read and work a tapestry crochet graph

In tapestry crochet you carry the unused yarn inside your stitches and switch colors to draw a picture. Each square of the graph is one stitch, usually a single crochet.

Reading direction

Graphs are read from the bottom up. For right-handed crocheters working flat, read odd rows from right to left and even rows from left to right. Working in the round (bags, baskets, hats), read every round from right to left. Left-handed crocheters read in the opposite direction. The written instructions above follow the mode you pick.

Size and gauge

Finished size depends on your gauge: divide the stitch count by your stitches per inch (or per 10 cm). Single crochet stitches are often slightly wider than they are tall, so a graph can look a little squat once worked; crochet a small swatch and add a few rows if needed.

Choosing colors

Two to four colors are easiest to carry. Pick yarns with clear contrast in lightness, not just in hue. Change color on the last pull-through of the stitch before the new color starts for clean edges.

Prefer beads or blocks? The same picture can become a kandi cuff or pixel art.

FAQ

Tapestry crochet pattern maker questions

How do I turn a picture into a tapestry crochet pattern?

Upload the picture above, set the width in stitches and the number of yarn colors. The graph, the color key and the row-by-row instructions are created instantly. Print them or save as PDF.

How many colors can tapestry crochet use?

Two to four colors are easiest because you carry every unused strand. The maker allows up to 12 for advanced projects.

Which way do I read the graph?

From the bottom row up. Flat: odd rows right to left, even rows left to right (right-handed). In the round: every row right to left. Choose the mode above the written rows.

How big will my piece be?

Divide the number of stitches by your gauge. For example, 60 stitches at 4 stitches per inch make a piece about 15 inches wide.

Can I use it for C2C, mosaic or filet crochet?

The graph works for any one-square-per-stitch technique, including mosaic and filet charts. Dedicated C2C and filet makers are coming.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The graph is created in your browser and your image never leaves your device.
