Seigaiha Waves kinusaiga pattern

Advanced 90 pieces 3 fabrics ≈ 6+ hours

The traditional Japanese seigaiha (blue ocean wave) motif of overlapping concentric arcs. Repetitive and meditative, with many curved pieces for experienced makers.

Fabrics you need

#ColorSuggestionPiecesAt 8 in
1 Navy 1 about 6" × 6"
2 Off-white 58 about 9" × 9"
3 Cobalt blue 31 about 6" × 6"
Maker tip: Work row by row from the top; each new row of arcs overlaps the one above, exactly like the printed pattern.

How to make the Seigaiha Waves kinusaiga

  1. Print and transfer

Print the cut map at your chosen size, tape it to a foam board and score each line about 1/8" (3 mm) deep, keeping the blade upright.

  2. Cut your fabric

Match the 3 numbered colors to your fabrics. Cut each piece about 1/4" (6 mm) larger than its shape on every side.

  3. Tuck the 90 pieces

Start with the background and work toward the front. Press the fabric edges into the grooves with a butter knife, seam ripper or tucking tool.

  4. Finish and frame

Trim any loose threads, tuck the outer edge around the board and set it in a shadow box or a deep frame.
