Checkerboard Nine Patch · Spring Blossom kinusaiga pattern

Intermediate 25 pieces 3 fabrics ≈ 3–5 hours

A five-by-five checkerboard with a contrasting cross through the middle — simple squares, big impact. This version uses the Spring Blossom palette of petal white, pink, rose.

Fabrics you need

#ColorSuggestionPiecesAt 8 in
1 Petal white 12 about 8" × 8"
2 Pink 8 about 6" × 6"
3 Rose 5 about 5" × 5"
Maker tip: Square pieces are the easiest to tuck: fold each corner in like a hospital bed corner.

How to make the Checkerboard Nine Patch · Spring Blossom kinusaiga

  1. Print and transfer

Print the cut map at your chosen size, tape it to a foam board and score each line about 1/8" (3 mm) deep, keeping the blade upright.

  2. Cut your fabric

Match the 3 numbered colors to your fabrics. Cut each piece about 1/4" (6 mm) larger than its shape on every side.

  3. Tuck the 25 pieces

Start with the background and work toward the front. Press the fabric edges into the grooves with a butter knife, seam ripper or tucking tool.

  4. Finish and frame

Trim any loose threads, tuck the outer edge around the board and set it in a shadow box or a deep frame.
